Conventional sources of energy    A source of energy that has been widely used for many years is called conventional source of energy. Eg. The fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum (petrol, diesel, fuel oil etc.),natural gas and electricity from hydro power. The fossil fuels are also used to generate thermal power .     Non- conventional sources of energy      A source on energy from which energy is generated and that can be replenished (renewable) is called non-conventional source of energy(alternate source of energy). Eg.Solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, wave energy, geothermal energy, biomass energy etc. The present non-conventional sources of energy like wind energy, solar energy etc.were conventional sources before the invention of steam engine.Man had used these sources in propelling ships, wind mills for grinding corns and pumping water. Solar energy and its applications    Sun produces enormous amount...

Bio diesel Jatropha is an oil-seed producing plant. It is cultivated for bio diesel production. There are some specific features of this plant which is convenient for cultivation. a) it can grow under any agro-climatic conditions b) it can grow on any type of soil c) grows fast and survives long years d) it can be propagated through even stem cuttings e) It is not grazed by animals Transesterification: The process of converting crude oil obtained from jatropha into commercially useful fuel is called transesterification. Pongamia pinnata is another plant that yields biodiesel. Wind Energy     The kinetic energy associated with the moving mass of air is called wind. The movement of air is caused due to the uneven heating of air by the sun.Hence, wind energy is a converted form of solar energy. Wind energy is utilized to generate electricity using wind turbines. The optimum wind speed should be between 8 and 22 m/s This is a video of wind mil...

Solar cell   The process in which a material produces electric current upon exposure to light is called photoelectric effect.Solar cell is a device used to convert solar energy into electrical energy. Biomass    The organic matter obtained from plant and animal wastes used for energy conversion is called biomass. The energy obtained from biomass is called bio energy. Advantages of bio energy: 1.It provides clean fuel 2.maintains environment to be clean 3.reduces carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere 4.improves the water retention capacity of soil. Biogas    Biogas is produced from biomass by anaerobic digestion. The major constituents of bio -gas are methane(about 70%) and carbon dioxide. In rural areas biogas is produced specifically using cowdung in gobar gas plant. It provides a) cooking gas  b)manure c) gas for lighting d) fuel for running small engines Energy conversion from biomass     Biomass is con...
