Alternate Sources Of Energy-Page 3

Bio diesel

Jatropha is an oil-seed producing plant. It is cultivated for bio diesel production. There are some specific features of this plant which is convenient for cultivation.
a) it can grow under any agro-climatic conditions
b) it can grow on any type of soil
c) grows fast and survives long years
d) it can be propagated through even stem cuttings
e) It is not grazed by animals

Transesterification: The process of converting crude oil obtained from jatropha into commercially useful fuel is called transesterification.
Pongamia pinnata is another plant that yields biodiesel.

Wind Energy

The kinetic energy associated with the moving mass of air is called wind. The movement of air is caused due to the uneven heating of air by the sun.Hence, wind energy is a converted form of solar energy.

Wind energy is utilized to generate electricity using wind turbines. The optimum wind speed should be between 8 and 22 m/s

Wave Energy

The kinetic energy associated with the up and down movement of water in the seas is called wave energy. This can be converted into electrical energy.

Geothermal Energy

The heat energy of the earth available within 10 kms from the surface of the earth. This is available in the form of hot springs.
